What a difference a day makes!

August 16, 2011

Chris and I just got home from a 24 hour stent as tourists in our own town.  Last week was our eighth anniversary and this week is his fortieth birthday so Pat-Pat came to spend the night with Amelia and we spent a day relaxing and enjoying each other without the benefit of caring for a very lovely but very needy young girl.  To her credit, she will not be quite as needy when she can fix her own meals and change her own diapers.

We did nothing incredibly special–a little shopping, a little alone time (translate however you wish), a lovely meal, a little champagne, a great night’s sleep and room service breakfast.  Then a quick trip to Best Buy and home to find a very happy Pat-Pat and Ms. A and a Poppy!

Chris and I have only had a few evenings away from our daughter since she showed up at our house–I think three. Once, after she and I both had a stomach virus that robbed us of a week of sleep and landed her in the hospital with an IV, the second when she spent a couple nights in Kentucky with family over Christmas–Chris and I both worked through that one–and this weekend, and this past weekend.

I was aware that my mother used to take these weekends with my dad on occasion, I just didn’t realize how refreshing they could be. Just to have no pressing responsibilities, no chores, no pager ( A’s new way to play with her phone is to say “beep, beep, beep”, put the phone to her ear and say ” hewwo, it’s Daddy”). It just makes everything a little easier when you have had a good meal and a good night’s sleep.

If you haven’t done that in a while, or haven’t ever, take my rested word for it– you definitely should give it a try.
